The Alchemist
The theme of this book is that true happiness is achieved by pursuing one's "Personal Legend" or overarching desire in life. The story is told by detailing the experiences of an Andalusian shepherd boy as he seeks out treasure buried near the pyramids in Egypt.
The language throughout the novel is uplifting, as is the plot, which encourages the reader to ignore and surmount the most common obstacles that get in the way of realizing one's dreams. This is all cleverly accomplished through a series of parable-like stories.
The book is spiritual and enlightening, but it is not without its flaws, the most glaring of which is the author's unsuccessful attempt to fuse deterministic religious premises with a more modern philosophy valuing free will and the importance of choice in achieving one's goals. Coelho frequently highlights central aspects of both these opposing viewpoints, but does little if anything to reconcile them. This has the effect of leaving the reader bewildered and unsure of what to believe.
All in all, this was a decent book despite its shortcomings.
